Hygge at Christmas

Today’s post is all about Hygge at Christmas. If you haven’t yet heard about Hygge (pronounced hue-guh) it’s a Danish term “for finding happiness in the little things in life”. After seeing this concept popping up across social media for the last 6 months or so, when I saw this book, Hygge: the Danish Art to Happiness it was an instant must-buy. Hygge has the best concepts surrounding it, all about the cozy moments and feelings of togetherness and finding your happiness from these. It seems to be a main reason for Denmark being the happiest nation on Earth.

So far, I have loved flicking through this book. As it is Christmastime, I’ve mainly been focussing on these elements, but I can’t wait to sit down and read it cover to cover. The book itself is really gorgeous. The subtle gold foiling to represent glowing lights on the cover is beautifully designed and looks divine on the coffee table. I love the raw simplicity of the photography and it just feels quite special to read.

Wintertime – page 117

“It’s time to feel utterly good about gathering on the sofa with family and friends, watching a TV show, playing games, reading, talking, eating food and lighting candles.”

“This is also the season for making homemade Christmas decorations, baking, meeting each other around mulled wine and pancake puffs…”

“Having a string of lights ensures a good atmosphere even when Christmas is over.”

Hygge at Christmas

I’m just in love with all of this. This is what Christmas is all about to me – finding happiness with your friends and family through little moments spent together. Now, Hygge could never be practical for every minute of your day, not in a modern world. But I do feel it’s easily incorporated just by taking the time to sit and enjoy the moment; really taste that hot chocolate and listen to a fire crackle. Moments like this is where true happiness seems to lie and we could all do with a little bit more Hygge in our lives, especially at Christmastime.

Hygge at Christmas

I’ll probably do another full review of this book at some point as I love it so much, I just really wanted to capture Hygge at Christmas for you all. I can’t recommend this book enough. Hygge: the Danish Art to Happiness would also make the perfect Christmas gift as it really is such a beautiful book.

I love nothing more than some home baking and snuggling up under a blanket at this time of year. I’d love to know what little things make you feel happiest?

  1. Oh this makes me miss Christmas so much! I really love the concept of hygge and how it’s all about spending time with loved ones and being cosy and snug. And the cover on this book is just too beautiful for words! I have The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking so it would be interesting to read this one and see how they compare and if there are different interpretations of hygge ☺️ I really hope to continue to hygge throughout the new year! xxx ps. your photos are just incredible! 💕

    • Looking at it is making me miss Christmas too haha! Yes I almost got that book instead of this one but I’d seen lots of reviews for the other one so I wanted to give this one a go! Would be good to compare though, maybe should get the other in the future! x
